Individual Note: According to an obituary from an undated paper from MO in possession of William G. Hall: "Jay," as he was known, was born in the log cabin home of his parents, 5 miles east of Ash Grove, Greene County, MO. His father and mother were pioneers of the county. As a lad, Jay helped his brothers drive the ox team for his father in breaking out the prairie farm of the "old homestead." In his youth, Mr. Jones had a strong interest in current events and read all the local papers, despite caring little for the routine of school life. He was a house carpenter, cabinet-maker and typesetter at various times in his career.
At the time of his first marriage, in about 1881, he moved his family to Republic, MO, where he built a cottage home. In 1894, he and brother I. S. Jones began publishing "The Monitor," a newspaper they were involved with for more than 10 years. It was known as a Republican paper with an independent spirit. The paper never missed an issue till at least Jay's death. He was a member of the Hood M. E. Church in Republic.
