     History of Sangamon County, p. 1466-7: After his marriage and a crop failure in 1859, William G. returned to Chatham Twp. to care for his father. On 9 Aug 1862, he enlisted and was accepted in Company I, 73rd IL Inf. After muster at Camp Butler, he was sent to Lexington, KY and then to Covington, KY. He participated in the Battle of Perryville on 8 October 1862; the battle of Stone River on 21 December of that year; Chickamauga on 19 & 20 September, 1863; Missionary Ridge, 24 & 25 November; and, on 9 May 1864, Rocky Face. He was wounded twice and was in hospital in Nashville, TN till 22 July, 1864. Rejoining his unit for battles at Spring Hill, Franklin and Nashville in November and December. During this time, Company I had been reduced from 73 to 27 men, only 5 of whom were able to answer roll call. William G. learned of his wife's death while stationed in KY.
Upon returning home, after discharge in 1865, he married again and eventually settled on Section 22, Loami Twp., where he built a house on his family farm of 80 acres,in Section 22 of Loami Twp. By 1896, the farm was over 200 acres in size. Mr. Miller became a stockholder and Vice-President of Farmers State Bank and was a Methodist.
According to an august 16, 1911 article in a Springfield newspaper, Mr. Miller was killed by an explosion of a traction engine used as part of a corn sheller. He was killed instantly, being directly in line of the force of the exploding boiler. Many people witnessed the accident and Carson Dodd, 18 years old at the time, was injured as were several others.
After his death, his daughter Edna, and her husband Cecil Keplinger, moved into his house, living with widow Sarah Hall Miller.
